Best private boat tours from Split, ranked

Ranking boat tours is subjective until you specify who is on the boat. A couple on a second honeymoon does not want the same day as a family with three children under ten. This list orders private charters from Split — your group, your skipper, your pace — based on what consistently delivers value across May to October.

I have run all of these routes dozens of times per season. The order changes slightly in shoulder months, but the logic holds.

#1 — Blue Lagoon and Šolta (half day, 4–5 hours)

Still the best first boat day in Dalmatia for most guests. The lagoon at Krknjaši delivers the turquoise water people see in photos, and a half-day charter keeps children and non-boaters comfortable. Leave Split at 07:30 and you anchor before the 11:00 fleet arrives.

Why it ranks first: short open-water crossing (about 45 minutes), sheltered swim time, predictable return by 12:30, easy to combine with an afternoon in Split old town.

Weakness: not unique in peak season after 11:00. The lagoon is shared public water. Morning timing fixes most of the disappointment.

#2 — Hvar and Šolta (full day, 8–9 hours)

The standard "I want Hvar" day without ferries. Pakleni Islands swim, two hours in Hvar town, Stomorska or Stračinska on the return. Energy levels vary — Hvar harbour is busy in August — but the combination of town and open water suits couples and adult groups.

Why second: covers the island people ask for by name, multiple swim stops, flexible lunch (konoba ashore or picnic on board).

Weakness: Hvar town crowds and marina fees ashore. Not ideal for toddlers who need naps; better for ages eight and up.

#3 — Blue Cave, Vis, and Hvar (full day, 9–10 hours)

When the cave opens, this is the best single-day route on the Croatian coast. Biševo entry, Stiniva or Budikovac, Komiža lunch, Hvar fortress walk — unmatched scenery density.

Why third, not first: weather and queue risk. A 06:00 departure and a closed cave frustrates guests who flew in for one free day. When it works, it jumps to #1 for that week.

Weakness: long day, early start, not negotiable for infants.

#4 — Brač, Šolta, tunnels, and hidden bays (full day, 7–8 hours)

Less famous than Hvar, often better for swimmers who want fewer yachts. The military tunnel swim near Šolta's north coast and Zlatni Rat views from the water are strong visuals without Hvar nightlife.

Why fourth: excellent for repeat visitors and snorkellers. Quieter anchorages mid-season.

Weakness: weaker "town" moment than Hvar unless you add a Brač lunch stop.

#5 — Šolta hidden bays (half or full day)

The anti-crowd choice. Milna, Donja Krušica, nameless pine coves — no landmark headline, just clear water and few boats. Ideal when guests say "we did Hvar last year."

Why fifth: seclusion and calm. Perfect for families with small children.

Weakness: no iconic postcard name for the group chat. Guests who need a "Hvar" or "Blue Cave" brag should pick higher on the list.

• Trogir morning swim: best half-day for guests staying west of Split or on a cruise ship with 6 hours ashore.
• Afternoon underwater museum + lagoon: for guests who refuse early alarms; returns around sunset.

Want one reliable swim day? Blue Lagoon. Want Hvar without ferries? Hvar & Šolta. Want the bucket list and accept a 06:00 alarm? Blue Cave. Want quiet water? Šolta bays.

Group size and boat choice

Groups up to six fit our Colnago day boats; six to ten use Jeanneau or Protagon. Above ten requires two boats or a different operator — we are honest about that upfront. Private pricing favours four to eight passengers: the per-person gap versus group tours narrows fast.

What changes in shoulder season

May and October reorder the list slightly. Blue Lagoon mornings are less crowded, so the urgency drops, but water temperature sits at 18 to 20°C — fine for short swims, cold for children who stay in an hour. Hvar town is walkable without August heat. Blue Cave queues shorten after 15 September when school groups leave.

November to April: only short coastal runs make sense. We do not rank cave days in winter because closure rates exceed 50%.

One last filter

If anyone in the group gets motion sick on buses, rank #1 and #5 (lagoon and Šolta bays) before Hvar or Vis routes. Open water hours are lower. If the group wants nightlife photos in Hvar harbour at golden hour, #2 jumps ahead regardless of our default list.
