Plitvice from Split: when to actually leave

The drive takes two and a half hours each way. By July the entrance quota is gone before ten. Program A or B, departure times, and what tour listings never mention.

Plitvice Lakes is Croatia's most-visited national park and the one most likely to disappoint guests who arrive without a plan. The park does not disappoint because of the scenery. Sixteen terraced lakes connected by 92 waterfalls are genuinely extraordinary. It disappoints because of crowds, entry queues, and photo spots that are shoulder-to-shoulder by 11am in July and August.

Here is what the timing actually looks like from Split.

Drive time and road conditions

Plitvice is 130 km north of Split via the A1 motorway. The drive takes 2.5 hours in normal conditions. In July and August, the motorway is smooth and the road through Otočac to the park entrance adds about 20 minutes. Total: 2 hours 50 minutes if you leave early.

The road approaching Entrance 1 (the upper entrance, near Veliki Slap waterfall) narrows through Mukinje village. In summer there is a one-way traffic system that changes direction hourly. If you arrive against the system direction, you wait. This is fixable by arriving before the peak flow starts at 09:30.

Program A versus Program B

The park sells two main programs at the upper and lower entrances. Program A starts near Entrance 1 and covers the upper lakes first, then the lower lakes. Total walking distance around 3.5 km on maintained boardwalks, 3 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace.

Program B starts near Entrance 2, covers the lower lakes including Veliki Slap (Croatia's tallest waterfall at 78m), then goes up to the upper lakes, around 5 to 6 km, 4 to 6 hours.

The distinction matters: Program A is more compact and suits families with young children or guests with limited mobility. Program B gives you more time at the lower lakes, which many photographers prefer for the turquoise colours and waterfall density, but it is physically longer.

When to leave Split

A 07:00 departure from Split city centre puts you at the Entrance 1 parking area around 09:50. The park opens at 08:00 but ticket lines at peak season begin forming by 09:30. If you want to be inside before the main tourist coaches arrive from Zagreb and Zadar (typically 10:00 to 11:30), 07:00 is the right departure time.

A 07:30 departure is acceptable from May, June, and September. Do not leave after 08:00 if you are going in July or August. You will spend an hour in the ticket queue on a hot road.

Entrance fees

Fees vary by season and ticket type. As of 2026: high season (June 1 to September 30), Program A/B adult ticket costs €35 to €40. Children under 7 enter free. Children 7 to 18 and seniors pay a reduced rate. The park does not accept cash; buy tickets online in advance if you want to skip the queue entirely. The booking window opens approximately 60 days ahead.

What to bring

The boardwalks are non-slip but they are board paths over water. Do not wear heels or flat leather-soled shoes. Trainers or walking sandals with grip are fine. The park prohibits food and drink near the water edges, but you can eat at the restaurants near each entrance.

Mosquito repellent is not optional in July. The lower lakes especially have standing water near the boardwalks.

The thing most guides skip

The electric boat that crosses the main lake between Program A and B sections has a queue of its own. In peak season, the wait is 20 to 40 minutes. The alternative is a walking path around the lake (about 1.8 km, 25 minutes) that most guests miss because the signs are small. If you want to move efficiently, skip the boat queue and walk the lakeside path. The view is better and you arrive ahead of the crowd.
