The question comes up constantly. Both Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park have waterfalls, turquoise water, and UNESCO protection. The choice changes the entire day's logistics.
Distance from SplitPlitvice: 130 km, 2.5 hours each way. Full day required, typically 11 to 13 hours door to door from Split.
Krka: 85 km, 1.5 hours each way. Possible as a half day or as part of a combined itinerary with Trogir, Šibenik, or Primošten.
Visual scaleThis is the decisive comparison. Plitvice has 16 lakes connected by waterfalls in a continuous 8 km valley. The scale of the system, the diversity of waterfall heights, the lake colour variation, the density of water movement, is unlike anything in Croatia or the broader Adriatic region.
Krka's Skradinski Buk is a single waterfall system 800m long. It is visually impressive, particularly the main lower fall, but it is a contained site rather than a landscape system like Plitvice.
If you can only visit one national park in Croatia, visit Plitvice.
SwimmingKrka: no swimming (banned since 2021). Plitvice: no swimming (banned).
Entry fees 2026Plitvice (high season): €35 to €40 adult, depending on program. Booking online in advance recommended.
Krka (high season): €30 adult, online recommended.
CrowdingPlitvice at 10:00 in July: 2,000 to 3,000 visitors on the main trail system. The boardwalks narrow to single-file at busy sections. The famous turquoise colour of the upper lakes is visible between groups of people.
Krka at 10:00 in July: 1,000 to 1,500 visitors. The site is smaller so the concentration is similar to Plitvice, but the circuit is more compact.
The solution for both parks is the same: arrive before 09:30.
The right choice for different guestsGuests with children under 10: Krka. The site is more compact, the boardwalk circuit is shorter, and combining Krka with Trogir gives the family two different experiences without overextending.
Guests on their first visit to Croatia who want the most impressive natural landscape: Plitvice. The scale and the UNESCO status matter here.
Guests who have been to Plitvice: Krka for the combination with Šibenik (which has its own UNESCO cathedral that rivals Trogir's).
Guests with limited time in Split (2-3 days): Krka because you can do it in half a day and save time for a boat day.
