Private boat vs ferry: Split to Hvar

Split and Hvar are separated by roughly 18 nautical miles. Every summer guest chooses between the passenger catamaran and a private boat. Both are legitimate. The mistake is picking ferry because it looks cheaper without counting time, luggage, and what you actually do on Hvar once you arrive.

I skipper private days; I also use the catamaran off-duty. Here is the straight comparison.

Ferry: what you get

Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka catamarans run from Split's catamaran terminal to Hvar town in about 60 to 75 minutes. Passengers only — no car. Summer fares are roughly €10 to €15 one way per adult; children less.

You get a scheduled seat, open deck or cabin, and arrival 5 minutes from Hvar harbour. For guests staying on Hvar two or more nights with a small backpack, this is the right tool.

Summer pain points: July sailings sell out 2 to 4 days ahead; queues at the terminal with wheeled bags; no swim stops on the way; return times fixed — miss the catamaran and you wait two hours or pay for a speedboat taxi at €300+.

Private boat day: what you get

A private Hvar & Šolta tour is priced per boat (from about €900 for a full day), not per person. Your group meets at ACI Marina Spinut, departs when ready, swims at Pakleni Islands, spends two hours in Hvar town, hits a Šolta bay on return, and docks back in Split around 18:00.

You skip terminal queues. You add swimming the catamaran cannot offer. You control departure within weather limits.

Cost comparison (real numbers, summer 2026)

Solo traveller: ferry wins. €20–30 round trip versus €900 boat — no contest.

Couple: ferry still wins on cash if you only need Hvar town and no swim stops. €40–60 total versus €900.

Four adults: ferry €80–120 total plus optional €50–80 beach club on Pakleni if you taxi boat out. Private boat €900 — about €225 pp — with swim stops and skipper included.

Six adults: ferry €120–180 plus Pakleni water taxi or beach costs. Private €900 = €150 pp with a full route.

Eight guests: private often under per-person cost of ferries plus separate speedboat hire, with a single meeting point and one plan.

Time comparison

Catamaran: 1 hour each way plus 30 minutes terminal friction each end if busy. Minimum 3 hours travel for a day trip before any Hvar time.

Private: 90 minutes outbound with a swim stop included, 2 hours Hvar, 60 minutes return via Šolta. More hours in water, fewer in queues.

Luggage

Ferry with two large suitcases per person in July is miserable. Private boats have deck space but are not luggage shuttles — for airport-to-Hvar-hotel moves, book a transfer to the ferry or ask us about drop-off options. For a day trip with day bags, private wins.

Sea sickness and weather

Catamarans in jugo (south wind) roll in the channel. Private boats can route closer to coastlines and choose calmer bays, but open water is still open water. Morning departures help both options.

When ferry is correct

• Multi-night Hvar stay
• Solo or couple, budget priority
• You enjoy the ferry ride as transport, not as the excursion
• Stari Grad or east Hvar base (car ferry to Stari Grad)

When private boat is correct

• One day only, want swimming + town
• Group of four or more
• Children who cannot sit still on a catamaran for an hour
• Fixed all-aboard time (cruise guests) — we plan backwards from your cutoff
• You already missed ferry tickets

Hybrid option

Some guests ferry to Hvar for a weekend and book us for a Pakleni half-day from Hvar harbour on day two. Smart use of both tools.

Bottom line

Ferry is transport. Private boat is the excursion. Compare them only after you write down group size, bags, and whether Pakleni swim time matters.

Car ferry vs catamaran vs private (quick note)

The Stari Grad car ferry matters if you are moving a rental car to Hvar for a week. It does not help day-trippers who only want Hvar town — you still need a taxi or bus across the island. Private day boats do not replace car ferries for vehicle relocation; they replace the passenger catamaran plus a separate swim excursion.

Repeat visitors

Guests who took the catamaran last year and "saw Hvar" often missed Pakleni entirely. The islands opposite Hvar harbour are the swim highlight; the town is bars and stone streets. Private routing front-loads Pakleni before the harbour fills with tripper boats.

Terminal tip

Buy catamaran tickets online in July — the kiosk queue adds 20 minutes and does not guarantee a seat. If you ferry over and regret skipping the swim stops, you cannot buy Pakleni access from the harbour without hiring a separate water taxi.
