Split Airport to the city: taxis, buses, and private cars

The bus is five euros. A taxi runs €28-35. Private transfer costs more but removes the variables that catch people after a delayed flight.

Split Airport (IATA: SPU) is located near Kaštela, about 24 km from Split city centre and 6 km from Trogir. Most international flights land at SPU May through October, when the airport handles most of its 3.5 million annual passengers.

The bus

Pleso prijevoz operates an official airport bus that runs to the Split bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) on Domovinskog rata street, near the ferry terminal. The fare is €5 per person each way. The journey takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and stops.

The bus drops you at the bus station, which is a 10-minute walk from the Riva waterfront and a 15-minute walk from the historic Diocletian's Palace area. If your accommodation is in the old town or within the Meštrović-Bačvice area, the walk from the bus station is manageable.

Limitations: the bus runs on a fixed schedule tied to flight arrivals, not a continuous timetable. If your flight is delayed significantly, you may wait 40 to 60 minutes for the next departure. The bus does not accommodate large luggage in the cabin, bags go in the underfloor hold.

City taxis

Official metered taxis queue at the arrivals exit. The regulated taxi fare from SPU to Split city centre is approximately €28-35 depending on destination and time of day. The fare to Trogir is lower, around €15-20.

The limitations: the queue at arrivals in peak season (July-August) can be 15 to 20 minutes long. The metre starts from the airport gate, not from when you reach the front of the queue. Some drivers take the motorway (A1), which adds a €2-3 toll but is faster; others take the old road through Kaštela.

App-based ride services operate from SPU but are less predictable than pre-booked transfers in peak season.

Private pre-booked transfer

A pre-booked private transfer solves the three main variables: waiting at the queue, luggage space, and arrival uncertainty after a delayed flight.

A private car from Nini Tours for up to three passengers costs €45 from SPU to any Split city address. For groups of four to seven, the V-Class at €65 covers the family luggage that would fill a taxi boot twice. For groups of eight or more, or guests with large amounts of luggage (yacht crew, wedding guests), the Sprinter at €80 takes everyone and everything in one vehicle.

Flight tracking

This is the variable most guides ignore. Flights into SPU are frequently delayed, airlines flying from UK, German, and Dutch airports frequently arrive 30 to 90 minutes late. A taxi will not wait. A bus will leave without you. A pre-booked private transfer driver tracks your flight number and adjusts the pickup time automatically. You land, clear immigration (SPU is very fast, under 15 minutes for most EU flights), and your driver is waiting with a name board at the arrivals exit.

Which option for which situation
  • Solo traveller, carry-on only, price-sensitive: bus
  • Solo traveller or couple with check-in bags, no time pressure: taxi
  • Family with children, or guests with multiple large suitcases: private car
  • Guests connecting to a ferry, boat, or onward hire vehicle on a tight schedule: private car
  • Groups of four or more: private car is cheaper per person than multiple taxis and guarantees no one gets split between vehicles
The ferry connection

Many guests fly into Split and connect to the Hvar, Brač, or Šolta ferry the same day. The ferry terminal (luka) is separate from the bus station and about 800m from it. Ferries to Hvar run from the Jadrolinija terminal; catamarans run from the adjacent terminal. If you are connecting to a ferry with luggage within two hours of landing, a private transfer that drops you directly at the terminal gate removes the transfer-within-a-transfer problem.
