Rafting the Cetina canyon near Omiš

Cetina rafting near Omiš from Split: Class II–III rapids, 30 km drive, what to wear, and why morning sessions beat afternoon slots in July and August.

5 min read

The Cetina River flows from the spring near Sinj through the Dalmatian hinterland and cuts a 30-km canyon before reaching the sea at Omiš. The canyon section used for rafting, between Radmanove Mlinice and Omiš, is 10 km of river with Class II to III rapids (moderate, suitable for beginners with a guide).

Distance from Split

Omiš is 30 km southeast of Split via the coastal road through Dugi Rat. Drive time: 40 minutes. The rafting starting point at Radmanove Mlinice is 8 km further inland up the canyon from Omiš town, total drive from Split: 55 minutes.

The rafting experience

The organised rafting route from Radmanove Mlinice to Omiš takes 2.5 to 3 hours on the water. Groups are typically 8 to 12 people per raft with a guide. The canyon walls rise to 400m above the river in sections. The water is clear and cold (14-18°C in summer from the Cetina spring origin).

Difficulty assessment: most adults with no prior experience can manage this route comfortably. Children over 8 who are confident around water and can follow instructions can participate. The guide handles navigation and gives commands for paddling direction, guests do not need prior rafting skill.

The most significant rapids are in the middle section of the route (Class III): a section called "Zeleni Vir" (Green Whirlpool) and the final approach to Omiš. Both are navigable by beginners with a guide. The guide will explain the approach and paddle commands before each significant rapid.

What to wear

Rafting companies provide wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets, wear these regardless of air temperature. Bring: swimwear under the wetsuit, shoes that can get wet (old trainers, neoprene water shoes), a change of clothes and shoes for after.

Do not wear: sandals, flip flops, or any footwear that can come off (a shoe lost in a rapid disappears).

Morning vs afternoon

Morning sessions (typically 09:00 start) have cooler temperatures and better river flow. The canyon is in shade until midday, which makes the morning session more comfortable in July and August. Afternoon sessions (14:00 start) operate in higher temperatures; the canyon shade is reduced and the river may be lower in water level if summer heat has reduced flow.

For families with children, the morning session is preferable.

Omiš town

Omiš is a small town at the canyon mouth with a working port, a visible fortress on the cliff above (Mirabella Fortress, walkable in 20 minutes, free entry), and a pebble beach immediately adjacent to the town. The town has a strong pirate heritage. It was the base for the Omiš pirates who controlled the Cetina canyon entrance from the 12th to 15th centuries and extracted tribute from passing Venetian and Byzantine trade ships.

The beach at Omiš, 200m from the rafting finishing point, is a practical end to a rafting morning. Lunch at one of the restaurants on the Omiš promenade before returning to Split completes the half-day excursion.
