Cruises stopping at Split: what fits in port time

Split gets 700 to 900 cruise calls a year. If your cruises itinerary includes one day here, you are luckier than most ports: the gangway is roughly 100 metres from the old town walls. You can see Diocletian's Palace from the ship.

That proximity creates a split in what guests actually want. First-timers often just walk the palace and Riva. Repeat visitors, or anyone who has already done the Mediterranean circuit, want to get beyond Split in the hours ashore.

How port time works

Cruise lines usually give 6 to 10 hours ashore depending on the ship's schedule. All-aboard can be strict. If the ship leaves at 17:00 and boarding closes at 16:30, you cannot run a Plitvice day that gets back at 18:00.

We track the ship name and all-aboard time when you book. The driver or skipper plans backwards from that cutoff.

4 hours ashore

Enough for Diocletian's Palace, the Riva promenade, and lunch in the old town. No car needed. Walk out of the terminal, turn left, you are inside the palace complex in five minutes.

If you have already done Split, consider Klis Fortress (20 minutes by car) for views over the city and the islands, or Trogir (30 minutes) for a compact UNESCO old town.

6 hours ashore

This is the sweet spot for a private excursion without rushing. Options that work:

• Trogir plus a swim stop on the coast
• Klis plus old town Split at a slower pace
• Šolta or the Blue Lagoon by boat if the sea is calm and you depart by 09:00

What does not work in 6 hours: Dubrovnik, Plitvice, or Mostar. The driving alone eats the window.

8 to 10 hours ashore

Now Plitvice, Krka, Hvar by private boat, or Mostar become realistic. You need an early gangway exit (ideally 08:00 or earlier) and a private vehicle waiting at the pier.

For Plitvice we aim to have you back at the terminal 45 minutes before all-aboard. That usually means leaving the park by 15:00.

Ship excursions vs private

The cruise line sells bus tours to Plitvice or Krka at €80 to €120 per person. You ride with 40 other passengers from your ship and two other ships. Departure times are fixed.

A private car for three guests from the pier often costs less per person than three ship excursion tickets, and you control the pace. For groups of four or more, the maths almost always favours private.

Meeting point

Private pickups wait at the gate near Gat sv. Petra, the pier facing the Riva. Your driver holds a name board. No need to find a taxi rank or negotiate in Croatian.

One honest warning

July and August cruise days in Split are hot and crowded inside the palace by 11:00. If your ship docks at 08:00, walk the old town first, then leave for Plitvice or the coast. If you dock at 10:00, do not plan Plitvice that day.
