Split receives approximately 700 to 900 cruise calls per year, primarily from April through October, with peak concentration in July and August. The port (Gat sv. Petra) is adjacent to the old town, the Diocletian's Palace old town entrance is visible from the ship's gangway. This proximity is unusual among major cruise ports and creates a specific opportunity: guests who want to see Split itself can do so entirely on foot without transportation.
The challenge is that most guests who have already visited Split on a previous cruise want to do something beyond the old town. A private vehicle from the pier opens the entire region.
What the port looks likeThe cruise terminal operates from two primary piers: Gat sv. Petra (pier St Peter), which handles ships docked facing the Riva promenade, and the deeper-water Gat sv. Nikole (pier St Nicholas), which handles larger vessels. The driver waiting area for private transfers is adjacent to the Gat sv. Petra gate, 100m from the gangway exit.
4-hour windowIf your ship docks at 08:00 and you must be back by 12:00, a 4-hour window is enough for:
- Split old town walk: Vestibule, Peristyle, underground cellars (€10 entry), Gregorius of Nin statue
- Klis Fortress: 15 km away, 20-minute drive, 40 minutes inside
Or:
- Split old town walk + free time on the Riva
An 08:00 dock and 14:00 return deadline (6 hours) opens Trogir as a worthwhile addition:
- 08:30 depart pier
- 09:00 to 10:30 Split old town
- 10:45 depart by car to Trogir (30 min)
- 11:15 to 12:30 Trogir old town, Radovan Portal, Riva walk
- 12:30 to 13:00 lunch at Trogir (or back in Split)
- 13:30 arrive back at pier
The key variable: Trogir is 28 km from Split port. In summer traffic, this can be 40 to 45 minutes each way rather than 30. Private vehicles typically use the faster A1 motorway slip road option.
8-hour windowAn 08:00 dock and 16:00 return allows Krka National Park addition:
- 08:30 depart pier
- 09:00 to 10:00 Split old town (brief)
- 10:20 depart to Krka
- 11:40 arrive Skradin boat departure
- 11:50 boat to falls
- 12:00 to 14:00 Krka National Park
- 14:00 depart Skradin
- 15:30 arrive back at pier
This is the maximum reach for an 8-hour stop. It requires no wasted time. Plitvice is not viable in an 8-hour stop (too far, approximately 3 hours each way).
Ship departure time monitoringShip schedules change. Engines have maintenance issues. Port authorities occasionally delay clearance. A private transfer driver monitors VHF port traffic and the ship's actual status through the visit. If the ship announces a 45-minute delay to sailing, we know and adjust the return schedule to give guests a longer stop. No shared excursion adapts this way.
Cost reference for shore excursion transfersUp to 3 guests: €45 port pickup to Split city + €15 per additional stop
Klis + Split: from €80 for up to 3 guests
Trogir + Split: from €90
Krka + Split: from €160 (includes driving time and park access wait)
These are private-vehicle rates for one group. Multiple guests sharing the same vehicle reduces the per-person cost.
