Klis Fortress stands at 360m altitude on a narrow ridge 15 km northeast of Split, controlling the only viable land passage through the Dinaric Alps toward the Dalmatian coast. It has been continuously occupied and fought over for 2,300 years.
The history firstKlis was a fortified seat of the Illyrian Dalmatian tribe before Roman conquest. The Romans expanded it as a border garrison. During the medieval Croatian kingdom period (9th to 12th centuries), Croatian kings used it as a royal seat. The fortress's longest siege began in 1513 when Ottoman forces surrounded it. Croatian captain Petar Kružić held the fortress for 24 years against Ottoman pressure before it fell in 1537. The fall of Klis opened the entire Dalmatian hinterland to Ottoman expansion.
The fortress was recaptured by the Venetians in 1648 and held until 1797. The current structure, visible defensive walls, towers, mosque (Ottoman, converted to church), and the interior court, is largely the result of Ottoman and Venetian modifications to the medieval structure.
Game of ThronesKlis served as the exterior filming location for the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones seasons 4 and 5. The slave auction pits and the exterior scenes of Daenerys on the city walls used the fortress as backdrop. The series increased visitor numbers significantly from 2014 onwards.
For guests who want the filming reference: yes, the fortress looks like the Meereen exterior. There are photos of the filming setup on display at the ticket office. For guests who want to understand what they are actually standing in: the HBO connection is window dressing over a 2,300-year military structure that controlled access to the entire Adriatic coast for nearly three millennia.
Entry and visitingTicket price: €10 adult, €5 children. The fortress interior includes the entrance gate complex, the main courtyard, several reconstructed defensive towers, and the interior spaces of the upper fortification. There is an audio guide available.
The view from the upper walls looks directly south over Split and the Split archipelago, Šolta, Brač, and Hvar are visible on a clear day. This view alone justifies the visit.
Time required: 45 to 60 minutes for a comfortable visit including the view.
Combination with TrogirTrogir is 27 km west of Klis by the coast road (via Split), about 35 minutes by car. The Klis to Trogir combination makes a clean half-day excursion from Split: Klis in the morning, lunch in Trogir, return by 15:00.
Trogir old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site on a 1 km island connected to the mainland by bridge. The Cathedral of St Lawrence contains the Radovan Portal (1240), one of the finest examples of Romanesque carving in Croatia. The Kamerlengo Fortress on the Trogir waterfront (€5 entry) has another elevated view of the Šolta channel.
